FAQ - Mobile


How can I use Socialight on my phone?
If you have a phone that is less than 3 years old, you should be able to use Socialight Mobile. However, the experience will vary depending on your country, network provider, your mobile plan and handset.

Socialight for mobile is available via WAP (a fast, tiny website made for mobile) or a JAVA application. We also use SMS (text messaging) to send you notifications about the things around you. So if you have...


WAP Capable Handset & data plan*
You should be able to see m.socialight.com and play with Socialight mobile. Depending on your country, you should be able to enter addresses and find cool stuff near you.

Java capable handset & data plan*
Certain handsets can run the Socialight Java Application. This has a nice slick interface and some features not possible in the WAP version, like better creation tools. If you have a GPS handset or bluetooth GPS device, then Socialight will use this to automatically work out where you are and keep you constantly updated about great stuff around you.

If you live in the USA or UK
You can also use text messaging to search socialight and receive notifications about what is around you.

If you live in the UK and use T-Mobile, O2, Orange or Vodafone
We can look up your location using your network provider, so there is no need for you to enter an address to tell us where you are!


How much does it cost to use Socialight on my phone?
Socialight doesn't charge you anything to use the service. Standard rates apply for text messaging (SMS) and mobile data usage. Be careful that you know how much your mobile carrier will charge before you run up your bill.*

When will you support my phone?
Most phones in the US and UK will let you send SMS (text messages) to Socialight and receive personalized responses. If you have a phone with a web browser, you can also probably access Socialight's mobile web site from anywhere in the world. Soon, some phones will also support the Socialight Mobile Java application. We'll be putting up a page that lets you check if your phone is supported and, if not, lets you request that we support it.

* data plan means that your mobile network provider lets you send and receive data (If you can see m.socialight.com on your phone, then you have a data plan). Depending on your plan, data charges vary. Increasingly, data is being made available on all plans, even pay as you go but please call your mobile carrier for details about your plan. It's often easy and cheap to add unlimited data to your existing plan.
